Jets at All Scales
نویسنده
چکیده
I discuss recent developments in the field of relativistic jets in AGNs. After a brief review of our current knowledge of emission from Blazars, I discuss some consequences of the recent detection made by Chandra of X-ray emission from extended jets. Finally I report some recent results on the problem of the connection between accretion and jets, study that in principle could shed light on the important issue of jet formation.

Chandra and HST observations of gamma-ray blazars: comparing jet emission at small and large scales
We present new Chandra and HST data for four gamma-ray blazars selected on the basis of radio morphology with the aim of revealing X-ray and optical emission from their jets at large scales. All the sources have been detected. Spectral Energy Distributions of the large scale jets are obtained as well as new X-ray spectra for the blazar cores. Modeling for each object the core (sub-pc scale) and...
متن کاملThe X-ray and radio jets of quasars on kiloparsec scales
We have observed five quasars (0827+243, 0923+392, 1222+216, 1317+520, and 2209+080) with Chandra at 0.2-8 keV and with the VLA at 5 and 15 GHz. The X-ray emission is detected from all the radio jets except for 0923+392, whose double radio jet only extends out to the edge of the X-ray PSF. We model the spectral energy distribution of the jet features assuming that the X-ray emission originates ...
متن کاملEvolution: Why all plumes and jets evolve to round cross sections
Turbulent curtains of smoke rise initially as flat plumes and, above a certain height, they become round plumes. The same evolution of cross-sectional shape is exhibited by jets issuing from flat nozzles. Here we predict based on principle that all such flows should evolve their cross-sectional shapes from flat to round (and not the other way) at a critical distance downstream, which is predict...
متن کاملExtragalactic jets on subpc and large scales
x Abstract Jets can be probed in their innermost regions (d ∼ 0.1 pc) through the study of the relativistically boosted emission of blazars. On the other extreme of spatial scales, the study of structure and dynamics of extragalactic relativistic jets received renewed impulse after the discovery, made by Chandra, of bright X-ray emission from regions at distances larger than hundreds of kpc fro...
متن کاملJets from Sub-Parsec to Kiloparsec Scales: A Physical Connection
The Chandra discovery of bright X-ray emission from kpc-scale jets allows insight into the physical parameters of the jet flow at large scale. At the opposite extreme, extensive studies of the inner relativistic jets in Blazars with multiwavelength observations, yield comparable information on sub-parsec scales. In the framework of simple radiation models for the emission regions we compare the...
